SHEPHERD UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL DOWNS MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY, 36-7

Shepherdstown, WV, August 25, 2007 – The Shepherd University football team defeated visiting Millersville University, 36-7, on Saturday afternoon at Ram Stadium. It was the season opener for both schools.

Shepherd, ranked eighth in the nation by the American Football Coaches Association, is 1-0. Millersville is 0-1.

Shepherd running back Dervon Wallace ran for 215 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns. Fellow running back Vincent Riggs had 79 yards on the ground and three scores.  Quarterback Tyler Lazear went 12 of 17 passing for 104 yards. Mark Springrith was the team’s top receiver with four grabs for 49 yards. Defensively, linebacker Joey Hooks recorded five and a half tackles. Defensive back Layton Hersh made one interception.

For the Marauders, fullback Brad Lantz (so. Towanda/Towanda) led the ground game with 42 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Jamal Smith (fr. Camp Hill/Trinity) was two of six for 11 yards in his first game as a starter. Smith was the team’s second leading rusher with 31 yards. Receivers Andrew Tischbein (jr. Hummelstown/Hershey) and Randall Eggleton (sr. Philadelphia/John Bartram) each had one catch. Wide out Jimmie Cotton (fr. Sharon Hill/Malvern Prep) had a 57-yard punt return for a touchdown. Linebacker Marcus Banks (sr. Philadelphia/George Washington) made a team-best seven and a half stops. Safety Brandon Tyler (sr. Gettysburg/Gettysburg Area) recorded an interception.

Shepherd took a 6-0 lead on the opening drive of the contest. Riggs capped off an 11-play 80 yard drive with a 10-yard run. Kicker John Sheehan missed the point after touchdown (PAT). The Rams lead grew to 12-0 on a Wallace three-yard run with 1:51 left in the quarter. The score was setup by a 24-yard pass from Lazear to Springrith down to the Millersville three. The PAT was no good. Riggs had the lone score in the second quarter with a four-yard scoring run with 9:19 remaining in the half, making the score 19-0.

Shepherd kicker Bryan Beverage opened the second half scoring with a 33-yard field goal to put the Rams up 22-0 in the third. Lazear went five of six for forty yards on the drive. After stopping Millersville on a fourth and one, Shepherd went up 29-0 on a two-yard run by Wallace. Wallace broke off a 50-yard run on the previous play to setup his score. Riggs scored his third touchdown with 10:21 to go in the game to put the Rams ahead 36-0. Wallace had a 32-yard run on the drive. Millersville got on the board with 5:03 on a Cotton 57-yard punt return.

Millersville is off next weekend. Their next game with be on Saturday, September 8 at Slippery Rock at 3:15 p.m. The game will be broadcast on SportsFever Network, ESPN Radio and Red Zone Media.
