CROOKSHANK LEADS SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL PAST MILLERSVILLE, 21-5
September 8, 2007, Slippery Rock, Pa. – Quarterback Nate Crookshank threw for 293 yards and three scores to lead Slippery Rock University football past Millersville, 21-5, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference cross-over game on Saturday afternoon at Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
Crookshank went 15 of 21 passing on the day and had touchdown passes of one, 22 and 75 yards. He was picked-off once. Wide receiver Paul Favers was on the receiving end of six passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Corey Manfull added 150 rushing yards on 25 carries. Overall, Slippery Rock had 458 yards of total offensively. Defensively, the Rock recorded six sacks. Defensive end Cory Lacek led the way with three sacks.
For Millersville, running back Cardoza Jacks (fr. Coatesville/CASH) paced the Millersville offense with 76 yards on 18 touches. Quarterback Jamal Smith (fr. Camp Hill/Trinity) was 6 of 14 passing for 72 yards. Running back Brad Lantz (so. Towanda/Towanda) and wide out Randall Eggleton (sr. Philadelphia/John Bartram) each made two catches. Lantz had 22 receiving yards, while Eggleton tallied 20. Defensive back Brandon Shelton (sr. New Oxford/Gettysburg Area) led the defense with eight total tackles (five solo, three assists) and made an interception. Outside linebacker Marcus Banks (sr. Philadelphia/George Washington) also had eight tackles (four solo, four assists). The defense stopped two potential scoring drives by forcing and recovering two fumbles inside its five.
Crookshank started the scoring in the second quarter with a one-yard touchdown pass to receiver Ross Hornish to put the Rock in front, 7-0. Millersville got on the board at the midway through the second when a snap went over the head of the Slippery Rock punt and out of the end zone for a safety. With a 1:26 left in the half, Slippery Rock went ahead 14-2 on a 75-yard touchdown pass from Crookshank to Favers.
Millersville got the only points of the third quarter when kicker John Banzhof (so. Lancaster/McCaskey) booted a 42-yard field goal with two minutes left in the quarter. The key play was a 21-yard pass from Smith to tight end Derek Fry (jr. New Bloomfield/West Perry). In the fourth, Crookshank connected with Favers for a 22-yard touchdown pass to provide the final margin.
Millersville (0-2) will have its home opener on Saturday, September 15 with a PSAC crossover game against Lock Haven at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 1600-AM WDPC and www.redzonemedia.com.
