Collaboration with Government

Two days of Academic Freedom hearings were conducted by the PA House of Representatives on Millersville's campus. Those individuals who watched PCN were better informed about Millersville University and the commitment that the state university makes to our students to value diverse viewpoints in University classes.

As an employer you have several ways to connect with students and alumni through Career Services. Through our partnership with College Central Network, local businesses have the ability to post employment opportunities for students and alumni of Millersville University College Central Job Bank . You can also arrange to participate in job fairs and on-campus interviewing. Millersville is a member of the Central PA Employer Consortium, which hosts an annual job fair in February. This is an opportunity for businesses and organizations to connect with students and alumni from fifteen Central PA schools. Teacher Recruitment Day, a spring tradition in central Pennsylvania, connects school districts with students and alumni from 10 area colleges and universities. Career Services also sponsors a part-time job fair for employers in the area who are interested in hiring students for part-time employment. Typically over 500 students and community members attend.

The Industry and Technology Department at Millersville University has a long tradition of working closely with local businesses. Collaboration with industries to meet their needs is a critical element for the department and is achieved through work with community advisory boards. Faculty within the department also works closely with local businesses on a regular basis as consultants.

The University works with Millersville Borough officials on initiatives to improve streets and parking, safe residential areas and to reduce student alcohol abuse. A Sociology faculty member and Borough representatives, with the support of a PA Liquor Control Board grant, are working to address underage and high risk.

Millersville University and the Borough of Millersville have had a lengthy history of jointly serving both students and residents. The University is proud of its contributions to the Borough including: the purchase of a new fire suppression vehicle for the Millersville Fire Company as well as joint snow removal and the installation of a traffic light.

In collaboration with faculty, the Office of Community and Academic Programs (CAP) coordinates experiences for students that are related to the student’s major or minor. Annually more than 330 students work in large and small businesses, government offices and human services agencies. Through internships and cooperative education opportunities, employers gain access to a pool of highly qualified, motivated and prescreened employees.

Millersville University participates in the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Department’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit program (EITC). As an Educational Improvement Organization, Millersville University can receive businesses’ tax credit dollars for the Lancaster Partnership. The Lancaster Partnership is a collaboration between businesses and the University to provide the means and motivation for minority students within the city of Lancaster to receive their high school diploma, complete a college education and find professional employment opportunities. Millersville University, the School District of Lancaster, and the sponsoring corporations all bring unique strengths to this relationship.

Professional Training and Education (PTE) is committed to providing professional training and education in key fields that reflect the academic strengths of the University and training requirements of the region. This is done through the Corporate University which works in consultation with organizations and businesses to determine training priorities and/or to develop customized training solutions.

The Shanghai Executive Training Program is designed to provide a high quality educational opportunity for Chinese executives to learn about U.S. business principles and practices, to improve Chinese and U.S. relations and to enhance mutual understanding necessary for successful economic and cultural exchanges in the future. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences, in cooperation with the U.S. Commercial Service, U.S. Department of Commerce, sponsored a one-day conference entitled “Exporting To China: Bridging Trade.” Over 100 individuals from a wide range of companies and agencies attended this conference.

Millersville University hosts a regional office for the US Department of Commerce. Deborah Doherty, Director, US Export Assistance Center, is housed on campus in the Cumberland House. She is available to provide advice and assistance. In addition, several symposiums have been offered to the regional business community.

Millersville University Faculty have received competitive grants from government agencies for program development and research in post hurricane management analysis, mosquito management, occupational safety and environmental health training, radar imagery on the sea surface, the Pennsylvania Governor's Institute for Technology Education, and the Pennsylvania Governor’s Institute for Mathematics Education.
