Regional Economic Development

Employers have several ways to connect with students and alumni through Career Services. Through MU’s partnership with College Central Network, local businesses have the ability to post employment opportunities for students and alumni of Millersville University in the College Central Job Bank . Employers can also work with Career Services to arrange to participate in job fairs and on-campus interviewing.

The Center for Disaster Research and Education (CDRE) conducts research into various issues related to disasters and terrorism. Their work includes investigation of behavioral and organizational issues related to mitigation, planning, and response to disasters and terrorism.

The Center for Economic Education (CEE) provides economics teachers with the resources and training to develop a more economically literate community. The Center is funded by the Pennsylvania Partnership for Economic Education, businesses and foundations, the National Council for Economic Education, and the University.

The Center for Environmental Sciences (CES) provides a forum for scientists, planners, developers and educators to exchange information about environmental stewardship. CES promotes research and education about air quality, land use, water resources and biological resources.

The college experience offers many students important lessons in civic engagement and community service. At Millersville University, student volunteers expand existing service resources in the community by being mentors to children, cleaning playgrounds and parks, and working in community nonprofit agencies, among many other projects. In 2003-04, more than 23,000 hours of noncredit volunteer work were provided.

Faculty from the Economics Department manage a program targeted at students in grades 4 through 12, post-secondary students, and adults who want to learn more about investing and managing their financial future. The Stock Market Game enables participants to discover the risks and rewards involved in decision-making, the sources and uses of capital, and other related economic concepts. Group leaders are teachers or parents who serve as leaders for an extracurricular club. Still other SMG advisors may be Human Resource managers planning to adopt the adult version of the competition for their employees in order to expose them to financial markets and investing.

Elizabeth Jenkins Early Childhood Center is located on the Millersville campus. It is a model school for undergraduates studying early childhood education. Filled to capacity, it provides education and childcare for pre-school children of employees, students and area residents.

Millersville faculty provides consulting services to regional organizations and government entities. Projects involve data collection and analysis for criminal drug courts, providing economic consulting to regional businesses, and tobacco prevention and cessation workshops.

In addition, the University manages the Governor’s Institute for Mathematic Education that promotes continued professional education among educators by providing intellectually challenging programs that will enhance the educators’ academic classrooms and assist them in improving their students’ performances.

The Governor's School for Teaching, a five-week summer program for talented high school students, encourages them to explore careers in education by creating a model school, developing and teaching lessons, completing leadership projects, and creating a portfolio of their work.

Millersville joined the Higher Education Working Group, a collaboration of Lancaster County’s higher education insti¬tutions, to promote the county to college prospects and graduates.

The Industry and Technology Department at Millersville University has a long tradition of working closely with local businesses. Collaboration with industries to meet their needs is a critical element for the department and is achieved through work with community advisory boards. Faculty within the department also work closely with local businesses on a regular basis as consultants.

The Lancaster Partnership is a collaboration between businesses and the University to provide the means and motivation for minority students within the city of Lancaster to receive their high school diploma, complete a college education and find professional employment opportunities. Millersville University, the School District of Lancaster, and the sponsoring corporations all bring unique strengths to this relationship.

The largest Migrant Education program in the state is housed at Millersville and serves the children of migrant workers in Lancaster, Berks and Lehigh counties. This federally funded program provides educational and health support to about 3,200 children of migrant workers. Programming includes in-school programs, summer schools, health clinics and parent support programs.

The Office of Social Equity & Diversity and the office of Human Resources partner to facilitate a sexual harassment prevention and education program for Millersville Borough and Lancaster City firefighters.

Professional Training and Education (PTE) is committed to providing professional training and education in key fields that reflect the academic strengths of the University and training requirements of the region. To expand community linkages and serve regional economic needs, Millersville offers classes at Liberty Place in Lancaster . The University is an investor partner in CareerLink, which offers adult continuing education evening courses.

Service-learning when students receive credit for volunteer work in their academic interest area, engaged 3,550 students last year. They volunteered almost 110,000 hours of service to 248 agencies with a financial contribution estimated to be $1.9 million.

Millersville has several partnerships with area school districts to promote children's interests in science and mathematics. Through the Spotlight on Science program our faculty makes presentations in local schools. The Summer Honors Program in Science and Mathematics offers talented African-American and Latino high school juniors the opportunity to explore these subjects at the college level during a three-week residential program. Its aim is to increase the number of students of color at Millersville; students who complete the program and their senior year successfully are guaranteed admission. The Summer Science Training Program aims to stimulate the interest of gifted children and teens. The Women in Math & Science Conference seeks to stimulate the interest of high school girls in careers in these fields. And the annual Science Lectureship brings children and teens to campus to hear a presentation by a nationally known scientist.

Upward Bound is a year-round program that gives economically disadvantaged middle and high school students the opportunity to explore their educational options and solidify their goals. During the academic year, students spend one Saturday a month on campus strengthening their academic and communications skills. During a five-week summer session, the students live here and, through a simulated college experience, discover what college is all about.

The Weather Information Center (Earth Sciences department) issues hundreds of local forecasts and threat assessments annu¬ally to regional media and the local com¬munity. Skilled meteorologists and students working towards that goal provide data, weather forecasts and commentary – in all seasons. Regional newspapers, television and the web carry the prognostications of Millersville forecasters.
