Workforce Development
Employers have several ways to connect with students and alumni through Career Services. Through our partnership with College Central Network, local businesses have the ability to post employment opportunities for students and alumni of Millersville University College Central Job Bank . You can also arrange to participate in job fairs and on-campus interviewing.
The Industry and Technology Department has a long tradition of working closely with local businesses. Collaboration with industries to meet their needs is a critical element for the department and is achieved through work with community advisory boards. Faculty within the department also works closely with local businesses on a regular basis as consultants.
The University has entered into a new partnership with the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. Kirsten Bookmiller, director of Global Education and Partnerships at Millersville, says this is an important community initiative, especially with a growing Spanish-speaking population in cities like Lancaster and Reading. Millersville University is working to better serve the needs of the Latino community in the region.
The Lancaster Partnership is a collaboration between businesses and the University to provide the means and motivation for minority students within the city of Lancaster to receive their high school diploma, complete a college education and find professional employment opportunities. Millersville University, the School District of Lancaster, and the sponsoring corporations all bring unique strengths to this relationship.
Working with the Office of Community and Academic Programs (CAP) employers gain access to a pool of highly qualified, motivated and prescreened employees. In collaboration with faculty, the Office of Community and Academic Programs coordinates experiences for students that are related to the student’s major or minor. Annually more than 330 students work in large and small businesses, government offices and human services agencies.
A collaboration has been formed between the Corporate University, Graduate Studies Office and Lancaster County Community Foundation to establish a Non-Profit Resource Network at Millersville. The Network will provide organizations with training and education, technical assistance, a resource clearinghouse, research assistance, and other professional development opportunities. Professional Training and Education (PTE) is committed to providing professional training and education in key fields that reflect the academic strengths of the University and training requirements of the region. The Corporate University works in consultation with organizations and businesses to determine training priorities and/or to develop customized training solutions. New under the Corporate University umbrella this year is the pursuit of competitive awards from grant-funded entities to provide training, as well as public programs done in partnership with companies to bring in national speakers. Through competitive awards for training received this year from the Workforce Investment Board we have, for example, trained approximately 200 supervisors in metals manufacturing at companies such as Harley Davidson, General Dynamics, CNH Global, Alcoa, Burnham, Ross Technologies, Osram Sylvania, and others. Non-credit public, Project Management courses were offered in spring 2006.
