The Department of Earth Sciences offers comprehensive programs of study leading to Bachelor of Science degrees in Meteorology, Ocean Sciences and Coastal Studies, and Geology. We also offer a program for earning a Bachelor of Arts in Earth Sciences, with a new option in Environmental Geology, and a Bachelor of Science in Education in Earth Science with a teaching certification in Earth and Space Science.

The NOAA Office of Education has awarded two Millersville Meteorology students for their oral presentations as part of the 2008 Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship Program. Congratulations to Jim Kurdzo (1st Place NWS division) and Alex Davies (2nd Place NESDIS division).


Jim HowerJim Hower (‘73, Earth Sciences) has been named the 2008 recipient of the John Castaño Honorary Member Award by The Society of Organic Petrology. Jim is in his 30th year as a Senior Scientist at the University of Kentucky’s Center for Applied Energy Research and is completing his 10th and final year as editor of Elsevier’s International Journal of Coal Geology.


Clark AwardDr. Richard Clark, meteorology professor and department chair,  is presented the 2008 AMS Teaching Excellence Award “for his enthusiasm and dedication to outstanding teaching and mentoring, and exceptional contribution to the professional development of students in the atmospheric sciences.”
