About St. Mary’s University College

Originally founded as a teaching school in the early 1900s, St. Mary’s University College came formally into existence in September 1985. Since then the campus has relocated, expanded, and upheld its unprecedented reputation for a quality academic experience.

St. Mary’s Falls Road campus offers a close-knit, friendly community atmosphere only a bus ride away from the historical center of Belfast. Explore the Botanic Gardens, stroll through a peaceful park, break for some traditional Irish Scones at St. George’s Market, trek through the Cave Hill countryside, or pop into a local art gallery – it’s all waiting for you in Belfast.

The Liberal Arts Bachelor of Arts degree program has been developed in collaboration and partnership with Queen's University Belfast. Students at St. Mary's also have access to Queen’s University Belfast learning resources including the library and computer labs. They are additionally entitled to use the Queen’s University Students Union.

History

St. Mary’s was built in the 1900's to provide teacher education courses, and the college has a proud reputation for high-quality courses for education students. For undergraduates, education courses are offered through a Bachelor of Education degree program, with concentrations in both elementary and secondary education.

Program Offerings

St. Mary’s semester courses are offered to full time students in which international undergraduate students attend classes with fellow college peers. The two areas of study at St. Mary’s are Liberal Arts and Education.

As part of the exchange program, students will examine the geography, history, culture and the education system of Northern Ireland and look at its place in Europe. At the end of the program, in addition to the assignments in the taught areas, students will be given the opportunity to develop their "E research" and "E presentation skills" through an Electronic Project and they will be given the opportunity to critically reflect on their time spent in Belfast by the submission of a reflective journal. An integral part of the program includes a Teaching Practice placement for 4 weeks in a local elementary or secondary school.

Cost

Students pay Millersville University tuition, tuition differential and fees, as well as a non-refundable, non-transferable $400 Millersville University program participation fee. The program participation fee is due approximately one month after program acceptance.

Students pay separately for accommodations and meals. Please note that the student has to pay a rental tax, one-month refundable damage and utility deposit and the first month rent upon arrival.

Financial Assistance

Students should investigate loans that may be available, such as application for Federal Student Aid. Scholarships have individual regulations, and students should contact the Financial Aid Office to determine if their scholarship is transferable. Another option is to research online or stop by our office for additional opportunities.

Dates

Students may choose to study at St. Mary’s University College for a semester or for a full academic year. The academic calendar is similar to that of many American universities. The fall semester begins in September and ends in mid-December, and the spring semester begins in January and ends in late May.

Accommodation

St. Mary’s exchange students will be housed in off-campus apartments with other international students, within the city of Belfast. Accommodations are located in working class neighborhoods within a 15-minute walk from campus. Apartments are fully furnished and students must provide their own linens and towels. No Internet access will be available in accommodations. Arrangements are made through the University, but paid separately to the landlord or renting company.

Students are responsible for their own meals. The city of Belfast is filled with thousands of restaurants, markets, and shops to meet every taste and dietary need. Apartments are all self-catering.

Eligibility

Most students who study abroad have traditionally been juniors. However, Millersville students can and do study abroad anytime after they have completed their first year or 24 credits. A limited number of participants are accepted for the exchange each year, and the selection may be competitive. Students should complete the application for direct student exchange one semester before wishing to go abroad. Please stop by the Office of Global Education and Partnerships to pick up an application and ask about deadlines. A minimum of a 2.0 GPA and two letters of recommendations from MU professors are also required. The Director of Global Education and Partnerships will then interview students and a selection will be made shortly after the interviews are completed.

Transfer of Credit

Students should work with their advisors to select courses which will fit into their major(s), minor(s), and General Education requirements, if appropriate.

A Request for Study Abroad Resident Credits form, available in the Office of Global Education & Partnerships, must be completed before the student leaves. After the study abroad program is completed and a transcript is sent to Millersville University, the Registrar's Office determines the final transfer of credit. All courses taken at St. Mary's University College will come back to Millersville as transfer credit. Please consult the Undergraduate Catalog ("Transfer Credit") for the transfer policy.
