The Collegiate Leadership Development Program (CLDP) was established in 2003 by the offices of Social Equity & Diversity and Student Programs. The program has been designed to enhance leadership opportunities by educating students of color in the process of university structure, organization and involvement. The CLDP will familiarize student leaders with key university administrators and create a better understanding and greater respect between students and the University administration. Upon completion of the program, students will provide University officials with a new reservoir of student talent available for appointment to boards, commissions, search committees, and other forms of service.
Program Objectives:
The Collegiate Leadership Development Program is held during the Spring semester. Please note that the weekly sessions will be held on Wednesdays, from 6:00 – 8:00pm beginning in January of 2006. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact The Office of Social Equity & Diversity at 872-3787 and/or the Student Programs Office at 872-3506.

Would you like to develop the skills that attract employers? Make the most of your collegiate experience? Meet new people? The Emerging Leaders Program is designed specifically for first year students at Millersville University. The mission of the program is to prepare first year students for the challenges of leadership in college and the workforce. This program is designed to help students develop their own leadership potential. No prior leadership experience is necessary.
Every individual has the capacity for leadership. This is the basic assumption of the Emerging Leaders Program. During the course of this program, you will learn to examine how your purpose in life influences your own goals and leadership. You will discover new maps for a rapidly changing world, think about the ethical responsibilities of leadership, and learn how leaders and participants mutually shape the environment of an organization or community. The overall purpose of this program is to encourage you to carefully analyze your responsibilities and commitments in the context of leadership for the common good and for purposeful change. This program is more than the study of leadership; it is designed to help you develop your own leadership potential.

This is a program designed for the involved campus leader who is committed to their role as a leader. This track is for students who want to further tap into their leadership potential, strengthen their skills, and challenge their level of awareness. Today's students encounter a world that demands a new level of intellectual sophistication, intercultural literacy, and social engagement from college graduates. They face technological revolution, pressing societal problems, and unparalleled opportunities. This program will cover a broad range of areas associated with effective leadership. These include the following: leadership language, theory, and style; communication; diversity; values, ethics and legalities associated with leadership; globalization; group member behaviors; and productivity through appropriate uses of delegation, meetings, decision making models, and power. These leadership areas are linked together in a network rather than stacked in a hierarchical relationship. For example, how you choose to communicate is related to your values and ethics. Or, your understanding of diversity among individuals is linked to how you make decisions with group members.
This program is designed to be an experience in leadership. Through team and community building exercises, students will begin to develop relationships with one another, thus creating a space of trust and consideration of others. Learning in this program requires students to be active participants in the learning process. It is imperative that students come prepared to engage in dialogue surrounding the leadership principles addressed in the readings and in everyday life. Students will need to think about personal goals for the program to help direct the learning environment.
Specific Learning Objectives:
Participants in the program must be sophomores, juniors, or seniors at Millersville University and have a 2.5GPA. Additionally, students must have participated in some extracurricular activity. Participation does not mean that the student must have held a position on the executive board. Participation merely means active involvement in an organization. Because of the nature of the program, participation is limited to 15 students. A quality learning experience in this leadership program rests heavily on a high degree of interaction and exchange of ideas among students and facilitators. Attendance is expected and essential to your successful completion of the program. The program meets on Mondays from 5:30pm – 7:00pm in room 43 of the Student Memorial Center (SMC) beginning on September 12, 2005 and ending on November 21, 2005.
